Tackling Vinyl Waste with Vinyl360

Last week’s blog explored the journey of backing paper waste with Vinyl360, highlighting the recycling process and its contribution to a greener future. Today, we’re taking a deeper dive into the path PVC, another core component of vehicle graphics, takes as it moves from waste to repurposed material.

Vehicle graphics have two main elements: PVC (vinyl) and backing paper.

Waste vinyl is the material that carries the digital print on a vehicle graphic and is discarded at two key points: small amounts during the application process and the bulk of it when the graphic reaches the end of its life, such as when vehicles are de-fleeted.

Traditionally, this waste vinyl would be sent directly to landfills or incinerated, contributing to environmental degradation. However, we are working with UK companies to repurpose this waste and divert it from landfills.

So, how does this work?

Once collected, the waste vinyl is shredded into small pieces, adding value to what was once considered unusable. The shredded vinyl is then packaged and sent to UK manufacturers, who further process it by converting it into pellets. These pellets open the door to a world of possibilities for sustainable production.

Repurposed vinyl pellets can be transformed into an impressive range of useful products, such as wellies, barriers, signs, and even fleet operational equipment like traffic cones. What was once destined for landfill is now contributing to building a cleaner, greener future.

What benefit does this bring?

Recycling vinyl into new products offers numerous advantages beyond just waste reduction. By repurposing vinyl, we’re reducing the need for new raw materials, which means less mining, extraction, and manufacturing of new plastics. This process also dramatically reduces the carbon emissions typically associated with producing new goods.

In addition, reusing vinyl into products that can themselves be recycled multiple times further amplifies the environmental benefits. By decreasing landfill waste and reducing the reliance on incineration, we’re building a system that works toward long-term sustainability.
